Who was Maria Montessori?

Maria Montessori was not just the first woman to ever become a doctor in Italy. She was also a groundbreaking education philosopher. She worked in the poorest areas of Rome, with children who were thought to be "unteachable." It was with these children that she developed a theory of human development that continues to inspire educators and schools around the world. You can learn more about Maria Montessori here

We are partnered with Guidepost Montessori, the largest network of Montessori schools across the U.S, to deliver the practical learning portion of our course module. If accepted into our program, we will help place you at a location convenient to you

Introduction to Montessori

Gain a deep understanding of the origins of the Montessori method, including Dr. Montessori's own history and how the method has been applied around the world for over 100 years. Learn how Montessori education differs from traditional classrooms, how to instill agency in young children, and the science that informs Montessori classrooms today

The importance of Early Childhood education

Dr. Montessori described children in the period from birth to age six as having an "absorbent mind." This early period, before a child even reaches traditional classrooms, is a critical period for growth and development. This is when a child can learn without conscious effort, naturally and spontaneously from the environment. This program will focus on how to enable and support children in this crucial stage of development.

Virtual coursework

In the first three weeks of this course, you will work in small groups to explore the history, theory, and practice of early childhood education. This includes small group class discussions, asynchronous group work, at-home work with real physical materials, and more.

In-school placement

This is real-world learning. You will end the course by dedicating three weeks to immersion learning in a classroom. Supported by trained Montessori guides, you will observe, discover, and directly teach these young students. You will explore all aspects of a Montessori classroom, from the routines of the day to the materials on the shelves. This immersive experience will be supported by virtual check-ins and reflection opportunities with your peer group.
